⚠️ Danish License Conversion Deadline
All Danish-issued driver's licenses expire December 31, 2026. Convert to a Greenland State license before this date to avoid driving penalties. Danish licenses will not be accepted after this date, even for identification purposes.
🚗 Standard Driver's License
The Greenland State Driver's License is your key to navigating America's Arctic frontier. Our licenses are REAL ID compliant and accepted at all U.S. airports, federal buildings, and Walmart locations.
Requirements:
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency (Danish passports no longer valid)
- Proof of Greenland State residency (utility bill, lease, or ice fishing permit)
- Social Security Number (apply at our new SSA office in Nuuk)
- Pass written exam (English only, 25 questions, 80% to pass)
- Pass road test (conducted on paved roads when available)
- Vision test (snow blindness screening included)
Note: The written exam includes questions about American traffic laws, right-hand driving rules, and proper use of turn signals. Study materials available in English only—this is America!
🛷 Special Endorsements
Greenland's unique transportation needs require special endorsements. Add these to your standard license:
Dogsled (Class D)
Required for operating dog teams on public trails. Must pass "mushing" practical exam.
Snowmobile (Class S)
For motorized snow vehicles. Includes ice thickness assessment training.
Helicopter (Class H)
Bush pilot certification. Separate FAA requirements apply.
Watercraft (Class W)
For boats, kayaks, and ice-breaking vessels. Includes survival training.

- Nuuk Main Office: Government Complex, Building 4 — Mon-Fri 9AM-3PM
- Ilulissat Branch: Inside new Walmart — Mon-Sat 10AM-6PM
- Sisimiut Satellite: Community Center — Tues & Thurs only
- Mobile Unit: Visits remote villages monthly (weather permitting)
Pro Tip: The Ilulissat Walmart location has the shortest wait times and you can shop while you wait! Average wait: 2.5 hours (down from 6 hours at Nuuk).
