NUUK — The first official license plates of the State of Greenland began shipping this week, and they're already causing a sensation among collectors, patriots, and people who appreciate the visual of a 1,500-pound apex predator wearing a red baseball cap.

The standard plate design, approved by Governor Johansson after what sources describe as "minimal deliberation and one very enthusiastic phone call from Mar-a-Lago," features a majestic polar bear wearing a Make America Great Again hat, standing on an ice floe against a backdrop of the American flag and the northern lights.

The slogan "America's Arctic" curves elegantly beneath the registration number, which uses a new "GL" prefix followed by a combination of numbers and letters that the DMV promises are "completely random and definitely not available for purchase in specific sequences."

"These plates represent who we are now: Americans. Arctic Americans. The polar bear in the MAGA hat symbolizes our fierce independence and our willingness to embrace change, even if that change involves wearing a hat that doesn't really fit our head shape." — Governor Erik "The Red" Johansson

Plate Options

The DMV is offering several plate designs to suit different tastes and commitment levels to American values:

🐻‍❄️

Standard Polar Bear

$85

Classic MAGA hat bear design. Mandatory for all vehicles.

🛢️

Drill Baby Drill

$250

Features oil derrick and "Energy Independence" slogan. Includes free oil change voucher.

🦅

Patriot Eagle

$150

Bald eagle clutching both American and Greenland flags. Very dramatic.

🏔️

Ice Sheet Special

$175

Glacier design with "Freedom Isn't Free (But It's Worth It)" slogan.

The Design Process

The winning design was selected from a pool of three submissions, all of which featured polar bears in some form of American headwear. The runner-up design—a polar bear wearing a cowboy hat—was rejected for being "too Texan," while the third option, featuring a polar bear in a top hat, was deemed "confusingly presidential."

Local artist Nuka Petersen, who submitted a design featuring traditional Inuit imagery and Greenlandic text, was thanked for her participation and informed that her submission "didn't quite capture the American spirit we were looking for."

"I proposed a design with a kayaker and traditional patterns," Petersen said. "They said it was 'very nice' but asked if I could add a bald eagle. When I added an eagle, they asked if the kayaker could be holding a gun. At that point, I withdrew my submission."

Collector's Market Explodes

Before the plates even shipped, a robust secondary market had emerged. The "Drill Baby Drill" limited edition, of which only 5,000 were produced, is already selling on eBay for upwards of $2,000.

Even more valuable are plates with certain "lucky" number combinations:

GL-1776: Sold for $15,000 to an anonymous buyer from Texas
GL-2024: Gifted to President Trump by Governor Johansson
GL-0001: Reserved for the Governor's official vehicle
GL-4EVR: Purchased by a cryptocurrency enthusiast for $8,500

The DMV has denied rumors that specific numbers can be purchased, while simultaneously announcing a "personalized plate program" that allows residents to choose their numbers for an additional $500-50,000 fee "depending on desirability."

"I drove from Ilulissat to Nuuk—a 350-mile journey—just to get my plates in person. I could have had them mailed, but I wanted to be among the first. I wanted to hold them. I wanted to... feel the freedom." — Hans Eriksen, proud plate owner

Technical Specifications

The plates are manufactured in Ohio by a company that previously made license plates for several U.S. territories and "one country that's not a country anymore." They feature:

• Reflective coating rated for Arctic conditions (-60°F to 80°F)
• Anti-theft mounting screws requiring special Greenland-specific driver
• RFID chip for "future toll road compatibility" (no toll roads currently planned)
• Special UV-resistant ink to prevent fading during 24-hour summer sunlight
• Small American flag hologram visible only under direct light

The plates also include a QR code that, when scanned, directs users to the state.gl website and a 15% discount code for the Greenland State gift shop (which currently sells only MAGA hats and seal jerky).

Vehicle Registration Requirements

All vehicles in Greenland must display the new plates by March 1, 2026. This includes:

• Automobiles (all 3,400 of them)
• Snowmobiles (required on front only)
• ATVs (front and rear)
• Dogsleds (yes, really—a special bracket is available)
• Boats (displayed on cabin or mast)
• Helicopters (optional but "strongly encouraged")

Danish plates will become illegal after the deadline, and violators face fines of $500 plus "cultural insensitivity counseling" at the new Greenland Citizenship Center.

Public Response

Response from the public has been largely positive, with a few notable exceptions. A group of environmental scientists at the University of Greenland issued a statement noting that polar bears are "threatened by climate change, not political fashion," but their concerns were dismissed as "typical academic negativity."

One elderly resident, who asked not to be named because "I still have to live here," offered a more nuanced view: "In Denmark, our plates were simple. White background, red letters. Very clean. These new plates... they're very... American. Very, very American."

He paused, looking at the polar bear in its tiny red hat.

"The bear looks confused," he added. "I understand how it feels."
